Whole Home Off-Grid Solar Example

Here's a kit of the products we recommend for powering your home!

The following is an example of what we recommend to power a typical American household.  You can customize this system on our website with the drop downs before you add it to your cart.

Unlike most solar companies, we respect your privacy.  We won't spam your email or your phone or knock on your door - but we're always here to help if you need to contact us.

Many companies claim to sell a product that can power your whole home during an emergency.  They usually show a nice photo of the little product on a kitchen counter or in the living room.  However they fail to address certain aspects of the design that are critical: battery size, ability to hard start large motors like well pumps, and user-serviceability or customer support.  These things require a larger heavy duty device like the Rebel Solar Generator

With your support, we're here to show the world that it is possible to design and manufacture a high tech product in the USA and that American products can compete in a global market!

Solar Generator

To power your home or small commercial building, we recommend the 24V Rebel Solar Generator since 24V is not inherently prone to voltage drop concerns compared to 12V.  However, if you plan to use your own batteries or mix-and-match batteries, the 12V Rebel is likely a better option. 12V batteries have been commonplace for about a hundred years, so you can't go wrong with a 12V Rebel Solar Generator.  Note that the Rebel's battery operating voltage cannot be changed at a later point.

We recommend the 6000W version of the Rebel Solar Generator because the continuous output can handle lots of devices at the same time.  This is a pure sine 240V split phase inverter, so it can handle any kind of sensitive electronics or heavy duty motors you throw at it!  The 6000W Rebel has a surge rating of 18,000W for 20 seconds.  Note that the Rebel's inverter output size cannot be changed at a later point.

Solar Charge Controller

The standard Rebel includes our CEP440 charge controller and can be used with up to 1200W of solar input at 24V.  There is no additional charge for that.  However, when powering your whole home, we recommend at least 4 x CEP440 charge controllers.  With a 24V system this will allow up to 4,800W of solar panels.  Note that although you can add charge controllers later, it's not plug and play and it's much easier to get them installed by our technicians.

Batteries

We recommend starting with at least one of our 14.4kWh battery modules, which is one of our top sellers.  For reference, the 14.4kWh battery module:

  • Can run 10 LED lights and (2) flat panel TVs for about 48 hours.
  • Can run a 1000W microwave for about 14 hours.
  • Can run a 3.5 ton central A/C unit for about 2-4 hours (continuous)
  • Is equivalent to about half of a 2016 Nissan Leaf EV battery

Cutting Edge Power's battery modules can always be added later very easily.  So don't worry about getting a battery bank that's too small - you can upgrade it at your convenience.

Solar Panels

We recommend starting with at least 20 x 100W solar panelsThis will allow up to 2000W solar input, but only at peak charging times.  Please note, there are many inefficiencies with solar panel charging systems.  In the real world, most times of the day will only charge at around 1000W-1500W with 20 of these panels.  If you live in a sunny area like California, Texas, or Arizona, you can expect a 6 hour day of charging at about 1500W.  At the end of the day you should have around 9000Wh of capacity in battery storage.

Solar panels can always be added later very easily - they're plug and play with our solar generators.  So don't worry about getting all the solar panels at once.  The important thing is getting the charge controllers (In this case 4 x CEP440) from the start.  Then you can build your perfect system as you go.

Transfer switch

You have two options with the Rebel Solar Generator: You can use the standard built-in receptacles (3 x 120V 3-prong outlets @ 15A each), or you can connect the Rebel to your home's breaker panel.  We recommend connecting to your home's breaker panel because it allows you to use your home's wall outlets, ceiling lights, etc without having to run extension cords everywhere.  Connecting to your home's breaker panel requires a generator transfer switch.  Transfer switches have been installed in homes for decades now and are easy enough for any electrician as well as some DIY-ers.

You may already have a generator transfer switch that you use with a gas generator.  In this case all the hard work has been done and you can plug your Rebel Solar Generator directly into your transfer switch and treat it like a gas generator!

Did you know Thomas Edison and his team were installing off-grid power systems in homes in the early 1900s?  Sounds like he was onto something!
